The Work of the Past, Present, and Future

Waukee Area Historical Society’s volunteer board members serve alongside community members on committees focused on our work to help our community explore the past, live the present, and preserve the future.

Join a Committee

Collections and Preservation

The Collections and Preservation Committee is all about protecting and sharing Waukee’s history. If you love to research, organize, and dig into stories from the past, this behind-the-scenes team might be a great fit for you.

You’ll help catalog and preserve historical artifacts, write up the stories behind them, and explain how they connect to the bigger picture of our community’s heritage. The committee also manages artifact donations, ensures items are handled and stored properly, and helps create interesting displays for events. It’s hands-on, thoughtful work that keeps Waukee’s history alive and accessible for future generations.

Events

The Events Committee is where history meets creativity and community. If you enjoy organizing, love working with a team, and have a knack for making things happen, this might be your spot. From small gatherings to large, citywide events, this group brings Waukee’s history to life through engaging and educational experiences.

You’ll help set goals, plan events, and make sure all the details come together smoothly. Seeing as there are always lots of event ideas, your energy and input will make a real difference. The team also recruits volunteers, shares updates with the Board, and looks for ways to keep events fresh and meaningful for everyone.

Wauktoberfest
The Wauktoberfest Committee is the crew behind our biggest event of the year—and it takes a mix of behind-the-scenes planning and day-of energy to pull it off.

This team works for months to create a fun, memorable celebration that brings the community together and supports the preservation of Waukee’s history. From coordinating logistics and sponsorships to organizing volunteers and handling setup and customer service on the big day, there’s a lot that goes into making Wauktoberfest a success. Whether you’ve got a little time or a lot, there’s a place for you on this team to help keep this beloved tradition going strong.

Community Engagement

The Community Engagement Committee helps spread the word about the Waukee Area Historical Society and keeps us connected to the people we serve. This team leads all things marketing and communication—making sure our mission, events, and stories reach the broader community.

Whether it’s hanging posters, attending events, or collaborating with other organizations, you’ll be an ambassador for WAHS. If you’re outgoing and creative, you can also help create and give presentations about local history and what WAHS is all about. From behind-the-scenes work to being out in the community, there are plenty of ways to get involved and make an impact.

Resource Development

The Resource Development Committee helps keep the Waukee Area Historical Society going strong by securing the support we need to preserve and share our community’s history.

This team focuses on building relationships with sponsors and donors, finding funding opportunities, and helping ensure WAHS has the resources to grow and thrive. If you enjoy connecting with people, thinking strategically, and supporting a good cause, your efforts here will make a lasting impact.

Our Unique Approach to Waukee History

Preserving history for one of Iowa’s fastest-growing towns can’t just be about looking back. Waukee residents and visitors shape the future of this community every day. That’s why the Waukee Area Historical Society approaches our work in three specific ways.

Explore the Past

Through our education and collections work, we help our community explore Waukee’s rich history and deep heritage. You’ll find volunteers presenting Waukee history in presentations around the community. We preserve and display historical artifacts online and at exhibits. And, we encourage the preservation of historic landmarks and stories of Waukee’s past.

Live the Present

But since our community is growing quickly, we work to help people deepen their roots in Waukee. By offering fun community events, we can create new memories and history together. Gathering as a community helps us build bridges between generations of Waukee residents and cultivate our small-town life.

Preserve the Future

As we often say, today is tomorrow’s history. So, our approach must consider how to preserve the history of Waukee, which has yet to happen—the future! We recruit volunteers, donors, and partners to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Waukee Area Historical Society as well as explore innovative preservation techniques and advancing technology to make Waukee history widely accessible.
